What ever they are, they are still your parents. We are to honor them still. We are to give them respect and reverence them. I always say this thing called parenthood does not come with a manual and we all learn as we go. Both parents and children. Jesus said that if we don't forgive others, He will not forgive us. May God Bless

There are exceptional in everything. But in general those who honor their father and mother as the promise says, will be given their rewards on this earth with long life and possession of land.
Exodus 20:12:

12 “ Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long upon the land which the LORD your God is giving you.

The Chinese have always been very respectful to their father and mother. They even go so far as honoring the ashes of their parents. As a nation, or kingdom, they have the longest life, from the year c.2100 until 1911, there was a continuous kingdom in China, and then from 1912 - 1949 continued by a Republic of China, and from 1949 until now The People's Republic of China.
The Chinese people own the greatest part of the land in the world, both in China and overseas. Everywhere you go there are China towns, but no American towns, uncless you call MacDonalds as American Towns.

Wow, n_007pen. I have wrestled with this one, myself --- What should I think when I read some philisophical directive like this (honor thy parents...) -- especially when my own parents fall "WAY" short of the ideal!

Well, first, I give them (my parents) only the credit they deserve -- they must have made some effort or sacrifice to bring me into this world. Then, if that's all I can muster, as far as gratitude, I turn my mind to a bigger "spiritual" picture ---- what are the unique talents I was given, and what should I do with them? My biological parents might have very little to do with what I am here to offer this world, but, if all they gave me was an "entry" into the world, well, that is what I can thank them for.

You have to find a way to be grateful, even for the smallest things. Do it for YOU. Bitterness will only gnaw at your own soul. If they were truly drunks and whores, just say "THANKS" for the gateway into this world, and I'll be running my own life from here on out, thank you very much!" We are all here for a reason.

Honor your father and your mother, to me, means be grateful for whatever they gave you. For one thing, they gave you life, and they probably didn't teach you things that were entirely bad. So whatever they gave you that was good, hold to that.

However, honor your father and mother does not mean that you should just do whatever they say or praise things they do that you think are wrong. That's not honoring. If you truly care about your mother and father you won't condone their inappropriate actions, but will rather try to help them to do right.

I'm sorry that you parents that are difficult to look up to. It is possible to learn from bad examples about what not to do, as well as learn what to do from good examples. Hopefully you'll be able to do both.

decide how you would act if a celebrity you respect like say maybe M. Jordan, or Billy Graham, came a stayed with you. Now treat your parents like that. When they come home you greet them as ifthey were that person. It makes no differance who they are. You treating them like that might be the very thing that turns them around. There are rewards for being obediant to His teachings but sometimes it takes a while to see it.

whatever your father or your mother may be , still you have to honor them. not for their sake but for your sake and for the glory of the Lord.

God said in exodus 20:12

12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.

Pray for them instead and praise God for you are able to practice other mortification like patience and understanding and many more that you are not aware.

God Bless!

I think it differs for every situation. In the example presented, don't do anything that would shame them because of YOUR actions, regardless of what they are. With everything you do, say, or think, do what is the right thing, and show them respect.

If that is the case, then honor them for bringing you into the world.

You better do whatever they tell you else you'll be stoned in the public square. Unless they tell you to disobey God, then it's YOUR duty to stone them first and let the community have their fill after.

The word of the LORD.
