you can report him.. they can take him to a hospital against his will and get him on medication. It happened to a freind of mine and she was really upset at the time... but it saved her life and that was 11 years ago and she is doing great now.. has 2 kids

ask him of what's going on and why is he doing so.
if he says he does it for fun:-
some people experience pleasure when they cut themselves. they feel 'alive'. for people like this, you'll have to inform their caretakers or parents about their current 'pass-time activity'. at least then, they'll decide to give him some medical attention. if you think that by telling his parents, you've broken the promis between you 2, all you have to do, is pay him a visit and show him how much he matters to you and how much you need him to stop cutting himself.
if he says he's undergoing pressure or depression:-
you have to give him a call and make sure you ease him up and make him realise that cutting himself is not a way to make pressure or depression subside.
if he says he's doing it because he just can't control himself:-
give him suggestions of ways to control this urge. sometimes, all he might need is to hear the consoling voice of yours, since you both are best of friends. other than that, you could advice him to keep away from sharp objects which could hurt him and tell him to go for a vacation and relax himself to slow down the urge.
ultimately, it's all in the head. just let him know, that no matter what he becomes or decides to do, you'll always be there for him and you'll always be his best buddy. after hearing this, you could be rest assured that everything will be back to normal.
all the best!

good luck. my best friend used to use everything she could to cut herslef, tacks, scissors, pins. (along with razors and stuff) shes been to different doctors. been locked in the "crazy house" but i think i may have helped the most. I helped her find better ways to take out her anger. theres a form of cutting done by tattoo artists. its controled, still has the same sensations, and has a pretty neat effect when healed. It helped her... it might help him.
if this isnt even a possibility, talk to someone, your parents. his parents. dont worry about his reaction so much, he should understand that you only talk about his problem because you care.

i used to have that problem myself. to be perfectly honest, there is nothing you can do. this is an addiction just like smoking or drugs..they are not going to quit until they are ready. whether it takes a scare, of cutting too deep and having to go to the hospital, or they just realize they dont need it anymore...but the more you push towards treatment the more likely they are to avoid it. i used to council teens with this problem as well. they just have to stop on their own...just let him know your concerned, and then pose the question..how would you feel if i cut myself..it will cause them to think from your standpoint, and that might be all it takes. good luck.

How old is this person? If young, tell someone of authority.. guardian, or whatever.. This person needs some counseling... invite the person over and have an intervention. or invest in a visit and be straight out with the person and get him some professional help.

let him know that you love him and maybe try to find out why he is doing it so that maybe you can help him with that. the best you can do right now is just be there for him and talk with him and listen to him and love him.
