Look in his throat. If you see any bumps or spots, particularly very red or white spots, take him in right away. It could be strep, which needs antibiotics. If it's just a general irritated looking redness, it may be viral, and you should give it two or three days to see if it gets better.

If his fever goes above 102, or he feels dizzy, ignore this and go on in.

Well how long has he had the fever? Does the back of his throat have white "blisters"? Are his tonsils swollen? If he has had the fever for more than 2 days, and you answered yes to the other questions, I would schedule an appointment with the doctor or take him to an Urgent Care. He may have strep throat, which needs to be treated with antibiotics.

If after a few days I am getting worse and not better, I will go to the doctor. Also, if my symptoms suggest that I don't have a simple cold but possibly a throat or bronchial infection, I will go to the doctor.

Too many times in the past I have put off going to the doctor and have spend entire winter seasons needlessly sick.

If he ackes along with fever, sound like a mild case of the flu. If the sore throat persists, it might be Mono.

Never never never wait. Please go as soon as he or you first gets sick, here is why. If you wait the sore throat and small fever can and probably will turn into something much worse. It will be harder to heal and it will take longer to get over. If your doc wants you to wait please find another doc because this one may be good but he doesn't listen to what you say. You need a doc who listens to you. Part of every doctors job is to listen to what the patient is saying, another part of their job is to make sure the patient understands what the doc is saying. So please, if your son is sick or you are sick, do the things you would normally do to get well and if that doesn't work when you think it should have, go see the doc. Good luck.

Strep throat will elevate temperature and make you feel horrible. It has to be treated with antibiotics. If he doesn't seem to be feeling any better in morning I would have it checked.
