For me, drinks just dont seem to taste as good if not through a straw. I know there are some drinks that just don't work with straws, but for everything else, why are they so much better through a straw?

I feel the same way. My best guess is that it hits certain taste buds before others, rather than all at once. Taste buds are grouped in areas that sense sweet, sour, etc in various places on the tongue (there are charts of this).
Perhaps it also causes us to consume our liquids with more attention than our usual mindless scarfing down our meals in order to get to the next thing on our schedules.
Perhaps it has to do with being a "super taster"- the 25% of the population that has more taste buds than the rest & is therefore more sensitive to tastes than regular tasters (50% of the population), or the undertasters (25% of the population).

I have no idea, but I agree with you 100%. I think it's because with straws, you are able to easily control how much liquid you're taking in at once as opposed to sipping. I even use straws with hot drinks. It just seems to be a much more pleasant experience when you drink something with a straw.

Perhaps its what you're usually drinking when you're usually drinking with a straw.

What I mean is, usually when people drink with straws, its at a restaurant or fast food type place where you are usually drinking soda from a fountain dispenser. The soda that comes from these machines (at least, in my opinion) DOES taste different than soda from a can or bottle at your house.

Also, drinking alcohol from a straw (cocktails) taste better because its being prepared by someone who is usually better at making drinks than you are (bartender).

So, I'd say (at least for beverages prepared for you) its not really the straw that makes your drink tasty, its the actual drink!

You are so right.

Just lately, I have had tooth problems and tried drinking coffee through a straw, and it tasted better.

Then I have recently tried Tomato Juice through a straw, and it was heavenly.

Even Vodka & Red Bull with ice is better through a straw.

Havent tried it with Beer yet and dont think I would.

I prefer strawless myself.

Maybe you just have a good memory (when you were young)of going somewhere with a loved one and you had a drink with a straw. So now you subconsciously make that connection.
