Why does my cat knock the dog's water bowl over? He will turn it over and just sit and watch the water run over the floor...i was ready to strangle him (not really) the other day...after i cleaned it up 3 times in one day... Any ideas?

he's trying to kill the dog. no really, well probably, but anyway i would get a super heavy flat bottomed ceramic bowl, he might not be able to tip that over.

you have a head strong cat. Get a weighted bowl he can't knock over so easy. The cat and dog seem to be looking for attention in anyway they can. This appears to be a new relationship between the two of them. Maybe in time it will resolve it self? Keep the bowl clean as possible and do not encourage either one of them to "pick" on the other one. My cat use to stare at the dog while he drank, then slap his face when he was done drinking. Then they would war "chase" one an other then stop and get side tracked doing something more interesting to both of them. This went on until the neighbors dog chased the cat and the dog intervened. Know they nap together in the same box.

Even if you do have a large selection of toys, it doesn't mean you're cat is entertained. Cats need tons of toys. They lose interest in toys quickly and look for something new. If you have the majority of the toys out in the open, they will be bored. They will find them more fun if you put them away and bring them out at certain times for a designated playtime.. because that toy hasn't been there all day for his disposal.

It's perfectly understandable that this is a new fascination to him. Honestly, I think the habit will just break in time when he gets bored with it. My cat used to love putting his paws under his bowl until it flipped over. It was aggrivating.

If you have a bowl like I did, where it's the two-bowls-in-one.. try giving him a seperate bowl for food and one for water, particularly a deeper water bowl.

My cats like to play with things like that and it seems the lighter the bowl is, the more likely it is to topple over while the kitties are at play. First of all, buy the dog a bowl that can't be flipped over, either ceramic or metal because they also are less likely to pass on germs between the cats and dogs or visa versa, and because they are a lot heavier. Beyond that, you can choose to not free water the dog and only put the bowl down when he needs to get a drink.

Get a bowl that cannot tip over for the dog.
Get a small table fountain, for the cat.One with trickling water over rocks etc...the cat will love that.
Set it on a sturdy table away from the dogs waterbowl. The trickling water will amuse the cat for hours on end,and maybe the dog gets to keep his own bowl.

I love my cats and every day they like to scoop the water out of their bowls. I think it is a conspiracy so that I will be at their beck and call to keep their feeding area spotless but then when I am brushing my teeth, they all gather round and all at once four 20# cats try to scoop all the running water out of the sink. They all have their ways, one prefers the mirror, the other the wall, the other the toilet and the other the carpet.
It really is fun, after wards, they have a blast.
I say let them enjoy life, we should all be so lucky!

I learned a long time ago that cats are fascinated with the sounds of water. I would water my plants, and my cat would go from plant to plant with me. They clearly like to hear moving water, and they clearly prefer water fresh.

Get a watering station, one too heavy to overturn.

Your cat is just fascinated with his reflection in the water and is trying to get the "stranger" he sees in there. Its just instinct for them. I have a cat that will sit and stare in the water dish for hours. Cats are just curious creatures.
