To the people who say things like "they will do the work we wont do"..thats not quite accurate. I just read recently that (cant remember where exactly) they deported over 200 illegal immigrants or so, and there was a LOOONG line of legal citizens waiting to fill the jobs...

Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses, yearning to breathe free,

Ha! I just asked a similar question! The best reason for them to stay is so that small service businesses can keep a larger percentage of the money they charge customers for lawn-mowing, roofing, painting, and "all the jobs Americans won't do". That means more of the small companies can stay in business.

Of course, that isn't a good enough reason. If they aren't good enough to stay in business without hiring illegals, then they should go out of business. So far as the belief that they fill the jobs that "Americans won't do". Well, companies create an environment that Americans don't want to work in because all of the co-workers are illegal Mexicans... people are more likely to work where the co-workers are similar to themselves. For instance, maybe a high-schooler would be more likely work at a job picking grapes for a vinyard if his co-workers were also high-schoolers and not 20 illegals, who come from some slum in Mexico. I met a guy who just returned from 2 years in Mexico who said the Mexicans there laugh at us and say we Americans are stupid for hiring the illegal immigrants. They say that it is the low lifes of Mexico that are flooding the borders; the ones who have trouble keeping a job there, or are gang members, or are criminals.

For me, 10 years ago I could go latin dancing and count on everybody else there, Latin and American alike, being pretty much like myself and now I can't go without running into creepy laborers who don't bother to learn English and can't even dance but just want to grind on me.

So, for the sake of putting some more money in the bank for small businesses and farmers, our neighborhoods are morphing into immigrant neighborhoods where courtesy and ethics mirror that which is acceptable on their home turf and where warring gangs battle for turf and I have to ask and trust my roofer when he tells me that all 5 Mexicans on my roof are legal.

Oh... AND where the IRS actually makes you press a number to get English!

We are a Nation of immigrants. We would not be the most powerful Nation in the world if not for the contributions of immigrants from every country in the world.

We need immigrants now to offset the baby boomers retirements and to keep Social Security solvent.

The illegal immigrants in usual recent discussions are mostly from Mexico, and I have found them to be mostly law abiding and hard working. I lived down the street from where a small community of migrant workers (mostly illegals) would stay for the months around the harvest. In three years of them being there, there was not one incident that required the police, and even though my shed full of tools was left unlocked most of the time, and my yard was full of new bicycles for my children, NOTHING was ever taken.

In contrast, my fellow white neighbors would have the police somewhere on my street at least three times a week. These "illegals" do not want to draw attention to themselves.

In the States I have lived in, the welfare program would not even consider their application without a birth certificate AND a social security card. So the argument about their depriving our citizens of welfare money is ridiculous. Welfare to Work did that.

As far as the criminal element, what group of legal immigrants have come here criminal free? Criminals are looking for new territory and new victims all of the time. The group that is easiest for them to prey on is the local illegal population. You can't shake down a business or scare someone too successfully if they can not understand you.

Drugs

The illegal immigrants are not the drug dealers. They are the people paying to be smuggled like the drugs to come here. They are doing the same thing any of us might do in a similar situation, trying to achieve a better life.

I would suggest a couple of things:

First a program for persons from any country that makes it here illegally:

issue an ID and work permit to all working age men and women

Make Courses available and completion mandatory (in their Native Language) to introduce them to the Laws and customs in the area where they are living and working.

Require employment within a time frame. 90 days seems fair to me.

As a penalty for entering Illegally increase the amount of Social Security taxes taken out of their paychecks to 150% of normal rates. This means every two workers would contribute for three people. This should go a long way to saving Social Security and still allow the Illegal to receive Social Security at retirement.

Legal immigrant will be taxed at the normal rates to encourage that path to citizenship.

After 5 years make them eligible to start procedures for citizenship.

As soon as citizenship is obtained, the Tax rate reverts to normal levels.

Employers

This is, as I see it, the biggest problem with the Illegal problem. If there were no employment opportunities no one would be risking their lives to come here. Aggressive enforcement of employment rules will limit the job markets, thus limiting the opportunities and the numbers coming across our borders. If they can't fulfill their quotas then perhaps they are underpaying the workforce, if not, the need for employees should be documented and the number of legal immigrants permitted should reflect these needs.

There isn't a good reason.

Our immigration laws are in place to protect American citizens and those living in this country lawfully from disease and criminality. I am a probation officer with many undocumented folks on my caseload. At least half of them have tuberculosis and most were crime involved in Mexico. THAT is why we have immigration laws. We innoculate our kids, and pat ourselves on the back for putting laws in place to protect our children from sex offenders... but they're pouring over the border in droves.. afraid of the Mexican jails. Well, DUH!

No one is saying people cannot or should not migrate to the US. They just need to do it lawfully, so we can protect our own.

And I can't resist taking a moment to correct the man a few posts above this... It is NOT the birthright of ANYONE to cross a border illegally... We have freedom to cross our state borders because it is LAWFUL here to do so... We do not have the right to "unlawfully" cross any border... into Canada or Mexico... not that many folks are even trying it...

There are no good reasons for illegal immigrants to stay - only good reasons why they should leave. And return through the legal procedures, if they really want to be here and be proud of themselves for being here instead of lying and stealing and skulking around in the dark like the criminals they are when they are here illegally.

all of you people need to realize that not all immigrants are from Mexico, unfortunately Mexico is the border for so many people from all over the world to cross illegally...and now is even more..due to the fact that the only way that illegal immigrants can cross the border now is by land or sea...look at all the sea shore in the USA...every day is news about immigrants in a small boats.why everyone blame Mexicans only?

I cannot give you a single answer as to why illegals should stay but I can give you at least 25 reasons why they should be thrown out. The first and most important answer is that they are here ILLEGALLY.

1. They should stay because they are willing to work a job no other America is willing to do.
2. We need thier help becausee a job of fastfood places would close down without thier help.
3. A lot of local business like Repair Shop, Retailers would lose money from migrant wages.
4. The reality is you throw out migrants USA economy will collaspe like Mexico thru higher inflation, and economic inefficenies in moving goods and services would result in mass deportation

Because aliens are just looking for a little fun ... and its not easy having a good time, you know. We shouldn't "prepare the transit beam" to send them back to their home planet just because their lifestyles are "too extreme" ...
