The simplest way to describe the difference between them is that a psychologist primarily aids the depressed patient by counseling and psychotherapy. A psychiatrist may also perform psychotherapy; but, in addition, can prescribe medications and perform ECT (electroconvulsive therapy). A psychiatrist is a medical doctor. A psychologist may hold a doctoral degree (Ph.D.) and be called "doctor"; but, is not a medical doctor (M.D.).

A psychologist has a degree in Psychology and is NOT a medical doctor. A psychiatrist has a degree in Psychiatry and IS a medical doctor. Basically, a psychologist will make you talk and won't stick you full of needles. A psychiatrist could well ask you to shut up and stick you with a relaxant until you are ready to take the Valium he prescribed.

In simple terms, both treat mental problems but a psychiatrist is a medical doctor and thus can prescribe medication. A psychologist tends to counsel more and is not a medical doctor. The specific mental problem determines which one you need. Some people need both.
