We are a Nation of immigrants. We would not be the most powerful Nation in the world if not for the contributions of immigrants from every country in the world.
We need immigrants now to offset the baby boomers retirements and to keep Social Security solvent.
The illegal immigrants in usual recent discussions are mostly from Mexico, and I have found them to be mostly law abiding and hard working. I lived down the street from where a small community of migrant workers (mostly illegals) would stay for the months around the harvest. In three years of them being there, there was not one incident that required the police, and even though my shed full of tools was left unlocked most of the time, and my yard was full of new bicycles for my children, NOTHING was ever taken.
In contrast, my fellow white neighbors would have the police somewhere on my street at least three times a week. These "illegals" do not want to draw attention to themselves.
In the States I have lived in, the welfare program would not even consider their application without a birth certificate AND a social security card. So the argument about their depriving our citizens of welfare money is ridiculous. Welfare to Work did that.
As far as the criminal element, what group of legal immigrants have come here criminal free? Criminals are looking for new territory and new victims all of the time. The group that is easiest for them to prey on is the local illegal population. You can't shake down a business or scare someone too successfully if they can not understand you.
Drugs
The illegal immigrants are not the drug dealers. They are the people paying to be smuggled like the drugs to come here. They are doing the same thing any of us might do in a similar situation, trying to achieve a better life.
I would suggest a couple of things:
First a program for persons from any country that makes it here illegally:
issue an ID and work permit to all working age men and women
Make Courses available and completion mandatory (in their Native Language) to introduce them to the Laws and customs in the area where they are living and working.
Require employment within a time frame. 90 days seems fair to me.
As a penalty for entering Illegally increase the amount of Social Security taxes taken out of their paychecks to 150% of normal rates. This means every two workers would contribute for three people. This should go a long way to saving Social Security and still allow the Illegal to receive Social Security at retirement.
Legal immigrant will be taxed at the normal rates to encourage that path to citizenship.
After 5 years make them eligible to start procedures for citizenship.
As soon as citizenship is obtained, the Tax rate reverts to normal levels.
Employers
This is, as I see it, the biggest problem with the Illegal problem. If there were no employment opportunities no one would be risking their lives to come here. Aggressive enforcement of employment rules will limit the job markets, thus limiting the opportunities and the numbers coming across our borders. If they can't fulfill their quotas then perhaps they are underpaying the workforce, if not, the need for employees should be documented and the number of legal immigrants permitted should reflect these needs.

Legal migrant workers in the USA, absolutely, Yes! I'd like to see them making a good wage and receiving benefits. Green Card status, with the option to move to other states for job opportunities that come open as the weather provides. Or stay put if the jobs are stationary.
The question was not in regards to illegal migrant workers but legal workers. Hate is stupid and ignorant. Comes from small minded morons who are afraid and insecure.
I'm a Republican and I know allot of Republicans that believe Mexicans immigrants have a right to come to the USA and live legally.
So do not make this a Party issue. Actually I have ran into more redneck democrats that hate Blacks and Mexicans and visa versa! I don't understand why on earth you all vote democrat. Seems stupid to me!!

Immigration is a way that you can pull talented people from other countries to improve the local talent here. A culture that has no room for new ideas usually grows stagnant. Having different cultures allow you to draw the best qualities from every ones experience. The process of screening immigrants assures those enter have desirable qualities. The problem with bypassing the system is that you can drain the local economy and also have people that do not contribute to the overhaul health of society as a whole.

I am in favor of migrant's coming to America, as long as we still have room for them. So many want to come here, but with all the illegals, were soon running out of room. We can always use fresh blood in this great country, new people, and ideas, and folks who come here legally are very welcome. It is sad that there are some people who have waited up to 30 years to come here, who have gone through all legal avenues, but can't be accepted because illegals, mainly the Mexicans are taking their chance away.
American's are finally standing up to the criminals who come here, and when were done deporting them, and placing them in jails, and even prisons, there ought to be a LOAD of room for those who wish to become American. Bless new Americans.

I'm in NO way welcoming Mexican immigrants to America so they can further ruin our country because their own homeland is ruined. However, I can tolerate their pressence if they've passed the legal criteria for citizenship.
I favor instant deportation of ILLEGAL Mexican or any other country alien residents in our country. Catch them and **boom!!** send 'em packing back home. Now, THAT's tax money well spent.
If illegal aliens commit serious felony crimes as a means to stay in USA, well then......I favor sentencing them to 5x more time set for that particular crime.....and faster death penalty process (w/ less appeals) should such the case be.

I have no problem with most legal immigrants
some of my best friends are from puerto rico
most legals pay taxes, obey the laws, learn english, and help america.
while most illegals are a burden. They do not bother learning english, they almost never pay taxes {they work under the table}, and they have a crime rate 250% higher then legals.
they also are a burden on social services {free lunch, healthcare, social security, welfare, etc.}
we are open to legals who HELP america, I want to keep the legals and slowly deport illegals and secure our border.

If they have something to contribute to society and aren't leeches, I support allowing some of them in.
I do wish that immigrants would endeavour to learn English, and would refrain from having children that they need federal help to support. But, the latter I can say about most lower class natives (people who were born here).

I'm in favor of LEGAL immigrants. If you don't pay your taxes, you shouldn't be able to reap the benefits. Right now, illegal immigrants can send their kids to public schools, use welfare, and any other resources that are available to US citizens.
