i don't think they were the manipulators, but the people who created the organized religions based on them to control people were manipulators.
they did the best job using mohhamed; using him as a base for a rather strict and controlling religion.
christianity was at first a success in the manipulation department but most of the followers are more liberal now.
buddhism was one of the least manipulating religions as you are free to do whatever u want, it was a philosophy and u were not bound to stick to and follow it on pain of eternal damnation.

They were better manipulaters by virtue of the greater ignorance of the masses in their times. Not much, mind you; the ignorance that persists to this day is pretty amazing, given our current state of knowledge.

jesus was not a manipulator. a manipulator sometimes tells lies to get you to buy or do what they want and jesus was sin free.
