Ask a question. Even something as simple as 'How was your day?' or 'What's your favorite tv show?'.
Listen to what she says. When she finishes, ask more questions about what she said.
It's funny, but I'm often told I'm a great conversationalist, even though I hardly ever talk much!

Give her a compliment. Then it's like the silence was just you thinking about her. With time, the silences won't be uncomfortable anymore.

Another strategy: just smile at her.

ask her what's on her mind. when there is an awkward silence she's probably thinking of something to say, or second guessing an action. Maybe she wants to say or do something but is scared of your reactions.

say something funny but not rude about the silence like "can you hear those crickets chirping or is it just me?" and then start looking around or something but say it jokingly or it could sound mean

Hmmm . . . when you don't have anything to say, you should back off. Here's a trick you can use sometimes . . . say something like "Whoa! You talk WAY too much!" That will get her laughing . . . that's a good thing. Good luck!

ask her something about herself...as much as i don't want to admit it, we girls generally enjoy talking about ourselves and if not that, we appreciate the fact that you would care to ask. and be willing to listen. there should be no reason to have awkward silences, just comfortable silences.
