Because they fear the idea of death, of change, of the unknown, and it's easier for them to fool themselves into thinking death isn't the end. It's a mental crutch, nothing more.

Why do seemingly intelligent people spell "seemingly" as "seemily" when there is a spell-checker built into the Yahoo! answers submittal form?

Why do seemingly ignorant people believe the same thing? Why do seemingly intelligent people not believe in life after death? There is a growing body of evidence for past life memory that is seemingly discounted without any investigation.

Why is it silly, asuming we all die and go to the same spirit world? That means anyone who died before you will be there - friends and family. If you are a "seemingly intelligent" person, wouldn't you agree?

When you are dead, it's all over. No going to heaven, unless you think of a hole in the ground as heaven.
Many christians need to believe in an afterlife and think they they will get some sort of a reward for grovelling to their non existent god. Would they do it if they knew there was not going to be a reward? I doubt it.
