Guys, I am just wondering, when you do "check out/stare at" the opposite sex and then you make eye contact...what do you plan to happen after that?? Do you want to see any signal from the girl and what do you do if she maintains eye contact? What about if she looks away really quickly and blushes??

It's easy to tell if someone is staring off versus true eye contact.
I wasn't asking about me or anyone in particular, just guys checking out all girls in general. Thanks! :)

If she smiles, I'm going in. If she looks away, or just stares back, I don't do anything because you are probably not interested. Even if you were, you would be a manipulative biatch for sending mixed messages to me. I'm not cool with that.

As to your question, men look at women, because we like what we see. Assuming the girl or woman is attractive.
As to wanting anything in return, not usually, if it is just in passing, you both walking in different directions, and you like the look of him, then a nice smile, and then continue on your way.
However, if you are in a dating scenario, such as a club, or dance, or social gathering, then it's different.
If you are an attractive woman, and I think you must be, if you are getting all these looks. Then you have to judge the response, yourself.
First, is this a guy you would go out on a date with. Then lowering your eyes, and a shy smile, will encourage him to approach you. Then you can go from there.
If it is someone you don't want to get to know, just turn around and ignore his looks.
Lets face it, we men, love looking at pretty girls, and do it all day long and night time too. We don't expect any reponse, it's just a fun thing we do, just as we admire a great truck or car.
Just pat yourself on the back, when you get those looks, its a compliment to you,
Sadly, from my point of view, we can't do that long wolf whistle, when we see an attractive girl walk bye. I imagine, many young women, haven't even heard that sound. But it could just make a woman's day, knowing she is looking good that day, and is being appreciated.

When i stare / check out a girl, i maintain the eye contact when she looks at me, if she continues looking, i smile. If she still continues then i'll wave / do something really random like thumbs up. But if i dont get a reaction and if she's still staring then she's probably stoned / not looking at me.
If she looks really quickly and blushes then i'll just walk up and talk. Reaction and timing matters heaps

The best signal a guy can get is continued eye contact and a smile. But if you don't like the guy, you can always roll your eyes and look away. That works most times.

Guys I know also sometimes stare off .. they get in their own little universes and arent seeing anything at all when their eyes are pointed in the same direction. Thats an option you didnt include. :)
