cc stands for Crap Cleaner - Great progarm and better still its freeware. Its more an overall internet survival tool but also has a good registery fix. I cant say enough about this program. It's fast ,simple , and effective to the point that it should be part of microsofts OS. Like Spybot you might want to send the guy a few bucks but like I said it's free. Most regestry scan fixes are a scam.

I haven't tried some of the other things people have suggested, surely many programs do this, but ccleaner is effective at reducing the size of your registry in order to improve performance by not loading as many shared program libraries into memory at bootup (.dll extension files). I would recommend it along with the venerable Adaware. Adaware is part of the GooglePack, which at the very least is an efficient way to install a bunch of useful programs.

HackThis, Spybot, AdAware.
None are very good, but the are the best of the free stuff. They do the trick for most pop-up problems.

I use Easycleaner. It also allows controlling what starts up when you turn on, and has a fast internet temp file eraser.
