I was wondering about on base housing in the Army. Do you pay for utilities? I know we have to pay for the phone, internet, cable all that stuff, but what about electric, gas, water and so forth. Or does anyone know where I can find a website that has all this info? We will be moving to Fort Lewis, Wa.

I should have probably pointed out that yes I am married and my husband is and E-6 in the Army. We wont know the move date until March, so I was just trying to get on the ball with stuff. My husband was stationed there before, but that was when he was single and since now being married there are different protocols for everything. I am a bit worried seeing this is my first move.

MOST housing stateside has and is becomming privatized so paying utilities will eventually happen. Your best bet is to call Lewis Housing to find out for sure.

PS Army mom, you really have no idea what you are talking about.. Families DO live on training installations.. Who the heck do you think trains soldiers??

You will also be able to find out your BAH rate to determine if you can find a place less than your BAH off post... You have to choice to live on or off

Military housing, or PPV housing is paid from the housing allowance you would get if you lived out on the local economy. The housing is provided wich included utilities (electric, water, gas) The only thing is that you do not receive the housing allowance. When in military housing you are not elegible for the allowance. When in PPV (private public venture) housing, the allowance is given to the management company directly via allotment for the amount equal to the housing allowance for the area you are in. Living in the local economy you get the housing allowance to cover the cost of rent and basic utilities, but in many communities the amount will only cover an average of 75% of the cost, leaving about 25% out of pocket expense to cover your housing. The housing allowance is based on cost of living in local market to the base your spouse is stationed in, and is adjusted by surveys taken annualy.

If you're not yet in the military, contact your recruiter and ask about these details. That's what they're for! If you are IN the military already, this is information you should be able to get through the contact information you'll have for Ft Lewis.

Isn't that where the Army has a basic training facility? families don't go to basic training.. just the newbies... you seriously need to get in touch with the recruiter and iron out these details...

contact housing. If you are married, then you should live off base.. Better rate pay for your hubby, * at least when my husband and I got married, army paid for everything.. Our rent was 600.00 a month, they gave my husband an extra 1000 a month for rent, and whatever bills.. its great!

I know that in Germany, you get a certain amount of ustilities at no cost, and if you exceed that you have to pay. But I haven't been in Germany in close to a year and a half.

Have you called the housing office yet. I'm sure they'd have all the info.
