There was a law in passed in September that makes it illegal for American banks and credit card companies to process transactions with offshore gambling companies. All of the penalties are directed at the financial institutions and would have no effect on you as a consumer. The law won't be enforced for another 3-6 months and many experts believe it isn't enforceable at all. The only real inconvenience that you may have to deal with is using a third party payment processor such as Neteller which makes sense anyway if you play at more than one poker room as I do. I personally intend to play poker online and support the poker rooms that have taken a stand and not only welcoming American players but are working with groups such as the poker player's alliance to get the law changed or repealed.

I assume that you are asking about funding a PokerStars account with a credit card ** issued by a United States financial institution** .
Credit cards have not been accepted for some time at most online gambling sites. This was due to the high incident of fraud, and not because of the recently-passed Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006.
Your best option to fund a PokerStars account -- or any other online gambling site for that matter -- is NETeller. It is a one-time setup that makes online gaming much simpler. You can make deposits to NETeller from a credit card, bank card, or bank account and then use the NETeller funds to play at online gaming sites. When you are ready to withdraw funds from the online gaming site, it goes back to the NETeller account; from the NETeller account, you can refund the credit card, bank card, or have the funds put into your bank account. Before you sign up, send me an email with subject "NETeller Bonus Request" and I will get you an extra 10% on your first deposit; my contact information is here: http://theonlinecasinogamblingdirectory.com/about.htm
Best of luck!
Robert

Some sites, like party poker have pulled out of the U.S market because they fear the government will take action against them. But sites like full-tilt and poker stars have said they are not going anywhere anytime soon. The bill is very loose in what it said and some feel that it will be years before any real action is taken by the government. I have accounts on pokerstars and full tilt and have had no problems. As far as credit cards i don't think they let you use them (credit card company's), but you can fund them using netteller.

Each poker room has its own rules, but in general, there is no law against you that will prevent you from playing poker online (however, depending on where you live, it might be illegal for you to play offline poker for money, hehe).
There are many poker rooms that accept US players, and will continue to do so, and there was a poker room (I will not post names) which lets you buy a "phone card" with you credit card, and then use that "phone card" to fund your account :)
So, yeah, the poker rooms will always find a way to accept credit cards...

If you had money in your casino account prior to the law going into effect, you can still play. Once you run out of money, though, you can't, legally, re-fund your account.
