chercher la femme - somewhat chauvinistic claim that a woman can be found at the root of every scandal. It actually originates with Dumas, not Napoleon.

As the others said, its meant to say that a woman is behind many of the ongoings in history. It is said that a woman was the downfall for the native peoples in Mexico during Spanish conquest. The story of Troy also revolves around a woman as does the story of Star Wars ( the full six episodes) This is a long standing belief and I am not sure on where i stand on it!

Théatre complet de Alex. Dumas - Page 103
by Alexandre Dumas - 1873
ya une femme dans toutes les affaires ; aussitôt qu'on mc fait un rapport, je
dis : « Cherchez la femme ! » Ou cher. die la femme, et, quand la femme est ...

The line being said by M. Jackal" and other historians say this is it.

Oh, I did find the quote in a text on Napoleon but it was by the author and refered to another General's "problems"

Cherchez la femme.

I'll translate for the benefit of others that don't know, "look for the woman". It means behind many events there is a love affair.
