My bird's beak is slightly dry and the surface of the upper mandible is slightly flaky, but it doesn't actually flake off. It is also very dark with a greenish tinge. There are also just a few brown, narrow, crusty feathers over the cere? What to do? He's about a year old, recent purchase, gets Kaytee Fiesta, water, and plenty of sleep. (He recieves no fruit or veggies at the time, but I am getting a crock to put those in).

It's probably nothing to be concerned about. Sometimes their beaks to flake a little bit. However, there is such a thing as beak and feather disease with is of major concern. I don't want to worry you unnessacarily because it could be staining from the food he's eating, it could be a cold. Until you can get him to the vet, keep him very warm. Heat is very healing to birds. Make sure he is actually eating, that is hugely important. If the bird is at the bottom of the cage, there is something wrong. But definately get the bird to a vet if for no other reason than peace of mind. Good Luck!

I would get him to the vet asap. A bird's cere should be clear, and NOT have crusty feathers stuck to it. You said your bird is a new purchase..I would question it's health. A little dryness is not a big deal, but it should NOT be green and have feathers stuck to it. Fiesta is a seed mix, and the seed are more than likely NOT the cause of any staining. Pellets can be staining, but have never seen staining from seeds.
You can give your bird a variety of fruits and vegies and they don't have to be put in a crock pot. Cooked is ok, but fresh is better. I give my birds a wide variety, and truely believe that variety is important. Fresh, frozen, cooked, raw. Pastas and other foods are good too. ( even meats) These should be a supplement to your birds main diet. A seed based diet is not healthy. Pellets are much better.
Take the bird to the vet! Get him checked out! Just make sure it is a vet with avian experience. :-)
Hope all is well.

It is perfectly normal for his lower beak to scale off like that occasionally. my amazon does it occasionally, and I help him out with my fingernail, by gently flaking it off, when I'm scratching his and beak. He is an amazon, and sheds the lower one frequently, revealing a shiny new layer underneath. Is your bird a larger species, or in the parrot family, because I,m not real sure about the keets, canaries, lovebirds etc. As for the cere condition, you should gently massage the feathers between your thumb and forefinger, and see if you can clean them up for him. Spraying him gently with clean, room-temp water will also help. He may just have some fruit or veggie residue on them. Make sure there is no discharge from his nasal or eye areas--if so take him to a vet immed...Birdman

Try a moisturiser that you can purchase at a pet store or have him seen by a vet, it could be mites.
