What are photoshop "Brushes"?

What are they? Are they literally brushes? And where can you obtain them? Can you download them? Someone please answer!

Brushes are the patterns that photoshop uses for its various "Painting" features. There are a large number of these built into photoshop, all of which are customizable in size, shape, and intensity. There are also several places on the net that you can download and install more brush shapes.

the brushes are a part of the program, they are like paint brushes that you can change the sizes of.
