Removing the carpet is not a problem. You then need to know what type of wood, laminate or real hardwood. I would highly recommend a professional, there are a lot of tricky cuts, and the safety issue, should convince you to have someone who knows what they are doing, install it for you.

If you want to replace the carpet call a professional. It's a difficult job, it takes a skilled tradesman.
