Reason I am asking is; I was a Army Infantry SGT the got out. Now I am thinking of joining the Marines and I am wondering what I can expect. Why do people get out of the Marines? If it's supposed to be so great?

Talk to a recuiter. Being a former Sgt. you know enough to be able to see through their bullsh*t and get the answers you want. Just remember though, you don't keep your army rank when you go in the Marines. Everyone, no matter what they used to be starts at Private and works their way up. The main difference between the Army and Marines is the leadership style/ability. The Army is very large and therefore they have the personnel to spread out and cover most if not all the billets required for a particular unit. Marines are a smaller force, so there is more emphasis on small unit leadership than the army. Being smaller means less people to fill the jobs, so if a job calls for an E-6, in the army that job would be held by an E-6, in the Marines, there may be an E-4 doing it because of personnel shortages. Hope this helps.

Other answers here addressing the marines as much more disciplined force are entirely accurate. The marine corps is also substantially smaller than the army and is also a component of the navy. The are beholden to the same protocols, parlance, and rituals of the navy as they are part of the navy department. The basic training is punishing and as such has a high drop out rate. In fact the marines are the only branch that does not require a standard enlistment commitment until after graduation, in other words you can quit during basic because many can not hack it. Life will be much more regimented and codified in the corps. If you feel you can handle it then absolutley go for it.

The marines originated from the small combat groups stationed aboard navy ships, that reppelled boarders, boarded other ships or went ashore, they had to be tough, excellent fighters, well disciplined, tight knit, self reliant and hold desperately as orders dictated no matter what odds. The army typically was less strategically pointed, takings days to form and move and occupy then administrate and rebuild cities or countries. I'm not being derogatory of either, but they traditionally served very different roles, so marines have to think and act like gear teeth biting the enemy, where the army has the luxury of being a huge machine bearing down on the enemy. If you made sargent I would think you'd do okay in the Marines, but you'll get picked on of course.

Hiya! I'm a Marine Mom!

Check out the marineparents.com website... many folks are married to or parents of marines... and many active duty marines post there as well.. so get it from the horses mouth! Any recruiter would drool to have you enlist under them, given your rank at discharge from the Army... so talk to the guys on the site and see what they have to say. They're not half bad.. :)

When I was in the army, ther had some guys from the marines who defected over to the army, so I guess the grass is the same, not greener on the other side.

my brother just graduated from the marines, as far as discipline is concerned there are no "red(?) cards" or cars that you throw up if you feel you are being mistreated. You get up at 4am and go all day untill midnight. Structuraly they seem to be very hard edged. If you are walking down the street and you see a high ranking officer, you stop, salute, and moveon. You hardly ever sit down, and when you do its either a) while using the bathroom b) while eating c) with legs crossed right hand on right knee and left hand on left knee. If you make them mad or they get mad at you you are subject to "towel parties", and/or your supervisor will take you to a sandtrap called "the beach" where you do pushups, situps, stop and drops once finished you are thenm ordered to rub the sand all over your body and go the rest of the day with sand in your colothes. HAVE FUN!
