Public officials and medical personnel have the obligation to protect an individual who is not capable of/competent to make their own decisions from either harming themselves, or others. The desire to kill oneself and/or others is considered to be evidence enough of an individual's "not being in their right mind", not being competent to make rational and informed decisions, and therefore in need of evaluationi and monitoring in a safe environment. As you have stated, you were at one point in time both suicidal and homicidal, therefore presenting a danger for harm to yourself and others. In these circumstances, the police are obligated to take an individual for a Psych observation and evaluation, to determine the necessity for intervention and treatment. If an individual presents an acute danger to themselves or others, forced medication and/or placement in a secluded environment and/or physical restraint may be utilised by medical staff until such time that the individual no longer presents an acute and imminent danger to themselves and/or others. Please note, specifics on laws will vary from state to state...

If a person shows any of the signes of someone who is mentally ill, then they by law have to bring you right to the loonie bin... They don't have what people with mental problems need at a prison, and there's too many ways for someone who is homicidal, or suicidal, to hurt themselves or others if they are truly serrious about it... They can't and don't want to take the risk of having more fetalities on their hands then they already have to deal with.
Merry Christmas.

They took you to the hospital so you could get help. What good would jail have done? The cops are trained in every thing, you can't pull any thing over them.

Because you tried to commit suicide or threatened to. People who aren't mentally unstable don't threaten sucide. Cops deal with people every day. You learn to pick out the drunks from the mentally ill. I would be thankefull they took me to a psych ward- at least you got treatment.

You were a danger to both yourself and others at that time and a mental hospital is equipped to handle that situation. When you are stabilized they would then transfer you to a jail if necessary.

because you are suicidal, and thats where you go. even if your in jail the suicidal ones go to the phych ward. But why would you want to go to jail? We used to say we were suicidal just so we could go to the mental hospital, its alot better.

Well if you're suicidal of course they will take you to a mental hospital.. Sometimes suicidal, or unstable people will murder out of their pain/depression.. So you're better off for treatment, rather than being locked up in jail.

They don't know that's why they take you to a hospital, they go there to get a real medical opinion on the situation, then if they find out that your not as nuts as you claimed to be then they take you to jail.
