In the famous painting of "The Last Supper" by Leonardo da Vinci, there is only a single chalice on the table during the Last Supper and Mary Magdalene was seated at the right hand side of Jesus and one of the apostles seated near her was holding a dagger in his hands. So, if they were drinking wine, I think Jesus was passing his chalice to each of his disciples and to Mary M., and not what is believed by most people that each disciple had their own "magic dishes" (term mentioned by Sophie Neveu in "The Da Vinci Code" movie).

I think in that time, everyone was drinking wine. I'm no culinary historian, but I bet there wasn't any other way to preserve juices than fermentation.
