how would you feel if you were given a religious type gift for Christmas; (say a Bible) from an elderly Aunt who didn't know necessarily what your religious beliefs or lack of beliefs were. How would you respond?

I would just politely say "thank-you" and accept the gift knowing that it was given with good intentions.

First, I'd say thank you. If the person really doesn't need to know my religion, I wouldn't offer that information. What I'd do with the gift depends on what it was. If it was a bible or qur'an or book about a religion that I don't practice, I'd give it to someone who would use it. If it was a meditation cushion or incense, I'd use it. If it were a decorative item, whether or not I use it would depend on if it was obviously meant for someone of another religion. Overall, if it is inappropriate, I would privately give it to friends or to a charity.

If the person knew that I didn't practice that religion and still gave me the gift out of spite (this has happened), then I would throw it away or leave it sitting where I found it---whether they were watching or not. I don't feel the need to thank people for being rude. The person's motives would be obviously self-serving.

Well its a gift so, just thank her. Beliefs change all the time so just hang on to it you never know when you might need it. Christmas is supposed to about the spirit of giving, not about receiving. Hope this helps...
