Ok my little brother Mohamed is 17 years old and he is driving down to Mexico with his friend's family. Even though he is Arab he has really blonde hair and blue eyes and really fair skin. Could this make him a target for kidnappers? I heard that there are kidnappers who go for the white kids because they think they are rich or something. Is anyone here from Mexico or have been to Mexico??? If so, could you tell me if he would be alright (I heard Tijauna is really crazy like this) or is there a chance he will be kidnapped? Hurry tell me because I might need to call him and make sure he keeps away from Mexico. BTW am his older sister and our parents are back in the Middle East and I'm the only one in Canada here.

Well North Americans, particularly Canadians (I am Cdn and can't speak for Americans) go to Mexico ALL THE TIME on vacation without fear of being kidnapped. I wouldn't worry about it. I know lots of people (blue eyed blondes too) who have been to Mexico with no problems and had a great time there, and would easily go back again.

I spent most of my youth in New Mexico and have been to Mexico a few times. I am about as white as they come, and the border towns are the worst. He should just not look touristy, and not go anywhere by himself. I know my parents were really watchful of me (only the girls in my family are blond and blue eyed) because of the kidnapping stories. Honestly I think most of that is rumor...I don't remember seeing stories of it on the news, though there is some truth to the assumption that they will try to take advantage of you if they think you are American and could be wealthy.

With a little common sense and buddy-work,your brother should be fine. Tell him to go further south and get away from the border towns as quick as possible. There is less crime and a much more beautiful country awaiting AWAY from the border.

It depends on what part of Mexico he is going to. In many parts of Mexico there is no more danger than there is for travelers in any country. However, I would not recommend that he travel to the southern part of Mexico, such as Chiapas, where militant rebels have control of some areas.

As far as Tijuana goes, it's a rough town, but light-skinned people are common there since it's a common destination for Americans. I personally won't set a 17-year-old boy loose on Tijuana because he could get into trouble easily there, but I don't think he'll be kidnapped because of his skin color, necessarily.
