Upside down? I'm not sure about that, but definitely better to put the camera in the vertical mode for most portraits.

I see know that some people think the flash lighting from a point and shoot is better with the camera flipped. I'd say that benefit would be margainal and the same result can be had by kneeling down a little. On camera flash is one of the worst ways to light a subject anyway. Use natural light or bounce flash or something other than the straight ahead on-camera flash.
