It can be pronounced either way. There are several words that the Brits/Aussie's pronounce differently from American's. The accepted way in the USA is to pronounce the "ni" the same was as it is said in the word "night".

Is it "Por-SHUH" or "Porsh?" The Japanese pronunciation is "NEE-kon." In the 60's, this debate raged, but I think even Nikon gave up and even their TV ads say it "NIE-kon" now.
