From what I can tell it is a random letter assigned mostly by writers of comedy who try to make the word Christ seem like a surname.

It's an arbitrary addition, to make the name easier to use as a swear word--which is the only way I've ever heard it used, while at the same time "softening" it, to make it seem less like a swear word to those who use it.
