I call my cats by different names and I wonder if they think I am nuts?

I think it depends on the cat. We used to have this really fat lazy cat named Autumn but eventually we also called her "fat cat", "fatty", etc and she never came (maybe she knew we were insulting her...)

on the other hand, we have another calico cat named Patches. She's full of life, and is pretty intelligent. We call her about 600 different names (patchy cat, killer, etc) and she comes to them all.

From my very long experience with many cats, there are NO negative effects. When I first got the cat I have now, I named her & used that name for awhile. Now I use about a half dozen other names, to which she responds. (& it isn't just the tone of my voice.) I use the "other: names depending on her mood. & PLEASE chocolaho--have you gone over the top? My cat "comes" running to me if I call her from three rooms away. (Maybe your cat has a reason for not coming when called.) The can opener has nothing to with it. Some (few) people think the only time a cat will respond is to food--dead wrong. (Unless he/she doesn't like you, which is always for good reason.) My cat & I are FRIENDS; & yes she "understands" all her names. Cats are incredibly intelligent. & psychic, too. So, have fun & use all the names you like!

If you call a cat by one name for a while then it will get use to that name then you can call it many different names. trust me i got 5 cats and call them different things all the time.

It would only have a negative effect if calling it had any effect at all.

I've never known a cat that gave a da*n what its name was or would come when called.

They know when the can opener is working on a can of cat food, though!

It already has. When people see the New York Times run 3 stories on its front page bashing her they tend to admire her even more. Even though the Times is pretty much the house organ of the Obama campaign it just adds fuel to the fire that the press is out to get her. They have to because she has turned this election upside down in McCain's favor. The Palin bashing has probably turned more women into McCain-Palin supporters than anything else. Look for the Democrats to lose the votes of white women in this election.

No, I don't think it has any negative effects. My cat, Blackie, has several nicknames. I call him "Blacker" instead of Blackie (my daughter calls him that). But, he also has many nicknames. Because he's a big boy, he knows he's "The Man" or "Horsey Boy" or "Heffalump" but if he's in trouble, he knows I'll do a particular pitch and go "Boy!" and he knows that tone and runs for the hills! lol
I also call him "cow kitty" but he generally answers to most all of them and he doesn't mind them at all.

no, i really do not think the cat will be confused if you call her by different names....i call my kitty 2 or 3 different names and she knows them all. i really think it depends on the voice tone that is used....especially around meal time....
hope this helps and happy holidays to you !!!!!

I have a cat that has many different nick-names. He doesn't always come to his nick-names. If your kitty is young, try sticking to one name till they get to know their proper name, but after that, go ahead with the nick-names.

I call my cat by his 'name' and also sometimes will say "precious" and he seems to answer to both! Go figure...but I don't think it really bothers them. And if it does, they will just ignore you until they are ready to come when they are called. Cats are just funny like that. :)
