Sports and cars are usually the topics of conversation. Get up to date on the latest sports news and learn something about cars. As far as making him interested in what you say that's up to him whether or not to talk to you or not.

For the average Joe - It's sports,especially football this time of year. Tell him you're winning your fantasy football league and he will be proposing by the end of the night.
For the average nerd - It's books and NPR topics.

most guys like to talk about sports, but when talking to girls we will talk about anything mostly to show some interest in them

cars...all guys know something about cars.
If you talk about something that you like, whether the guy likes it or not, you can get him to make conversation to you about it. Its better when you talk about something that you like, cause you'd be able to carry a conversation better that way.

I love music and going to the movies...those are sort of generic topics so you could start with that...
