The best way is to be patient and consistent. Only warn him once and make sure he understands that he only gets one warning. If he continues to ignore that warning, get down to eye level and tell him that until he listens, he will sit in the corner or on a chair anywhere from 5-10 minutes. If he's talking back, hitting, or doing something potentially dangerous to himself or others, a good smack on the butt and the corner or chair. He has to know that you are serious.

There's a great book called, "How To Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk."
Basically, you have clear but few rules, calm respectful listening to him and expression of your feelings, plus great tips on words to use and avoid to promote cooperation and listening. The goal of the book is to help you raise your child to develop self-discipline, using good communication, accountability, and logical consequences while maintaining your role as the person in charge.
It's a great, easy to read and understand, book.

Follow though with everything. Honestly I read the Supernanny books by Jo Frost....super cheesy but I learned so much and I HAVE an Associates Degree in Child Development but none of those classes actually prepare you for your own child.

You don't say how old your son is. One way is to warn him you will only say this once Tell him he is either in time out or take something away a toy or tv it might take awhile but it does work. Don't forget to have patience. Good Luck

Start by giving him a choice. You can listen and we can get along great or you can choose not and make us both unhappy. Start by taking away things he really likes to do such as videogames and toys or TV time. He will get the idea soon enough.

Be firm and CONSISTENT with your expectations for him. If you tell him no, mean it and prove it with your actions. Do not make idle threats--ie... I'm going to come in there if.... Tell him what he needs to do/behave/get done and the consequences for him doing it and the consequences for him not doing it. Follow through over and over. He will listen when he knows what you say has meaning that is important to him.

Take away his favorite toys, some of his privileges, the television and Internet, and dessert. If he knows he will lose one or more of these when he refuses to pay attention, he will straighten up fast!

get down on one knee, so you are at eye level with your son, grip him with both hands ether on his shoulders or on his hands, get right up close almost nose to nose and then talk coldly and directly to him, "you will NOT do that again"
