Another shopper and I accidentally bumped into each other in a very crowded mall (Xmas shopping) and I of course apologized. The response fom this elderly lady was "You a**hole". After that her adult son started threatening and abusing me - I was with my 8 year old daughter who was very upset by this. Where has common courtesy gone? Why is an apology not enough for some people? I always try and be polite, but get frustrated at the attitude of others. (Spleen vented - Merry Xmas all!)

Thanks all! Your thoughtful answers have helped counter-balance the attitude of these unpleasant people.

I am so sorry this happened to you. It amazes me how ignorant some people can be. I try and stay away from any stores at this time of year because it seems to be that its a full moon every night and all the crazies escaped from the nut house.. Merry Christmas to you and yours also!

Very, very rude. This could happen to anyone!
Common courtesy-it seems the only people who care about it are the ones who already have it.
Your poor daughter! that must have been very upsetting. You can use this as an example of families who just aren't raised right!

This type of rudeness was uncalled-for!!! That old lady and her son have no matters at all!!!! These people never had manners to being with. Most shoppers at this time of year are just stressed-out. What you bumped-into was ignorance!

Everyone is in a mad rush at this time of year. Even though you appolgized, she still wasn't happy about it. She must have been in such a rush to get to the next store to get her next gift for somebody. Instead of appologizing herself she went off on you, and blaimed the whole thing on yourself. Accidents happen all the time, and people seem not to think the happen to them.

The best thing you can do to combat rudeness....and yes, this experience for you and your daughter was classic...is to rise above it. By doing this you gave your daughter a good example of the right behavior.
