I'm 17. I think I have it but my Mom doesn't want to believe me. Don't know why. So without asking a doctor, is there any way I can find out if I truly have ADHD?

ADHD is an inherited disorder that is very common. It probably is the same disorder as obsessive compusive disorder and Tourette syndrom but with different symptoms.
You will probably be able to diagnose yourself better than any professional can. The main, most distressing symptom is mindracing. You mind will just not shut off. It is like a tornado is whirling around in your head.
Here are some self tests:

This is such an overdiagnosed condition, esp. in young boys, that people tend to have the opinion that it isn't real-it is!! At your age, you probably know enough to know you have it. Just reading about it and taking a few quizzes is enough to know if you do. No, this isn't a diagnosis, but it can be quite eye-opening to you.
I knew something was "wrong" with me, and then figured out I had it a loooong time before I ever got an actual diagnosis of AADD (adult attn def. disorder) and it doesn't start in adulthood.

Another important note, ADD and ADHD are similar, but different. You don't have to be hyper to have attention and learning problems.

For an actual diagnosis you have to see a dr, but to get started your school is required (public schools in my state, anyhow) to test you for learning disabilities if asked. Your mom does have to be in on this, but you might ask her to do it just to rule it out for your peace of mind. Also, I wonder if she's just afraid you'd have to be on drugs (medicaion). While this is a treatment, the diagnosis helps in other ways too. For instance, if you're easily distracted, like during tests, you will be able to request you be put in another room alone to take your tests, and things like that to help you function and perform better. It might also qualify you for other special helps and maybe even counseling, if desired. It has qualified me for special financial help paying for college, so you can see there's lots more to it than "getting meds".
I wish you the best.

I'm 15 and I'm in the same boat as you are so I'll be watching what people say on your question to help me too. Good Luck. It's good to see I'm not the only one.

You must be screened and diagnosed by a mental health professional. This cannot be done any other way. No online quiz or magazine test can diagnose you. Your mother sounds realistic to me and you sound almost as if you hope you have it. Settle this by having your mom take you to a psychologist.

You can go check this rating test to see iF you have it. Or you can go make an appointment with a doctor to see iF you have a real diagnosis.

I believe ADHD is a behavior issue...not a disease. Get more exercise before you have to focus. Eat less sugar and concentrated carbohydrates. Don't smoke or drink caffine.

Check yourself. If you are hyperactive you probably have ADHD.

You still here? If so, you do not have it.
