I think that everybody should be required to fulfill a two-year national service obligation when they turn 18. (If you're still in school, you should be able to get an automatic deferment until you graduate.)
If someone enlists in one of the military services, that should count as your national service obligation.

The draft was put forth recently as a method of sharing responsibility across all strata of society, rich and poor alike (although the truly rich and influential usually will find some way to outmaneuver its intent). The notion that those individuals with power, prestige, and money will do many things rather than risking their sons and now daughters in a war lends credence to more intelligent and diplomatic solutions.

It was bad when used before, it will be bad again. Military service should be completely on one's own free will. Forcing people to be in the armed forces will just create "draft dodgers" as in a past war. Which hurt everyone. After all isn't this suppose to be a democratic society, and free will and all.

I am a former volunteer Marine. I do not agree with the draft. I would not want to be on the front line with someone who does not want to be there. This was a big problem in past wars. People didn't want to be there so they would not fight.

This question is getting so old and it, short of a nuke going off in ATL, isn't going to happen. We don't need it and most of us in the service don't want it.
