Hi there...wollam43's guess is most likely correct. This sounds like it could be dermatophytosis (ringworm), which is contagious to humans and pets:
http://www.fabcats.org/ringworm.html
http://www.cat-world.com.au/Ringworm.htm
Ringworm is a very overwhelming difficult to control and cats need to be isolated away from other pets and anyone handling the infected cat needs to wash their hands thoroughly and the home will need to be diligently cleansed to prevent the spread of infection to pets and humans.

Sounds like a microchip and they are normally injected between the shoulders into the layer of fat. If you adopted this cat that would imply you got it from a shelter. Most shelters chip their cats. Were you not given an microchip information? And in the SIX YEARS you've had this cat - why have you not ever mentioned this to your vet at annual visits? Or have you not bothered to do that?

Take the cat to a vet. It sounds like it could be a fungal infection and it may be passed on to people. Whatever it is, don't mess with it. Find out EXACTLY what it is and treat it accordingly. And DON'T touch it or pick at it in the meantime. Keep the cat away from anything that touches your skin like sheets and pillows.

First off, take your cat to a vet. Only he/she will be able to tell you what it really is.
There are many things it could be.
Cyst, absess, growth, tick, skin problems, etc.
Again, take the cat to the vet and have it checked out by a professional.

You need to take your cat to the vet, pronto.
It might be a tick or a louse or something, but you just need to take your cat to the vet.
