All atheists have in common is that they don't believe in a god or gods.
They can believe in an afterlife, ghosts, fairies, anything - and so long as they don't believe in a god or gods, they are still atheists.
I personally believe in freedom, love, humanity, and cherishing reality, among other things.

The word atheist says it all. The prefix a- meaning "without" and root word "the-" meaning God. An atheist is one who doesn't believe in a god. My father was an atheist, and had no interest in telling others what to believe, he only believed for himself that God didn't exist. There was no need to replace Him, because, to my father, this world was all there was. When he died, he would go in the ground and be eaten by worms, become soil and feed plants. His thoughts, his emotions, his understanding of the universe, are all a combination of firing synapses and chemical reactions taking place in the hunk of meat that sits inside his cranial cavity.
Personally, I don't have enough faith for that, because I believe there's something more, but if you're REALLY an atheist, it's okay for people to believe in God. After all, if religion keeps people from hurting one another, all to the good. That makes things more pleasant for everyone.
BTW, my father, the atheist, lived a far more moral life than many of the Christians I've met since. I believe that Jesus came to take away my sins, but I'm continually amazed and appalled at how narrowminded many Christians can be when it comes to atheists. I'm glad you asked the question, though, because I hope that it stems from a genuine desire to understand atheists.

They believe the cosmos is everything that is and ever was, they believe in naturalism, and they believe we arrived here by a meanlingless, purposeless, hopeless process of evolution and are doomed to extinction inevitably. Life is an accident to them. Meaning has to be created and that is a huge challenge for atheists to create meaning and purpose from a meangless and purposeless existence.

Not nothing. That's nihilism. Atheists believe in a good many things, and it varies considerably. Many atheists believe in Democracy and Science, but not necessarily all of them. Many are secular humanists.

athiests believe in evidence, or proof. they won't believe in something that isn't scientifically proven, or something that they have not witnessed with their own eyes.
most importantly, they believe that many things happen because of a cause, not because a supreme one controls their destiny.

they believe that ther is no god. thats what atheism means in its Greek origin. but they do actually believe in something. believing in nothing is believing in something. but not all atheists believe the same thing. that is why there are different groups of atheism and not just one big denomination.

Atheists are not afraid of the term, "I don't know .....YET!", It is the religionists who are so deluded that they need answers to as yet unanswerable questions so badly, they resort to superstitionally derived god concepts for the cheap fix.
