Using Audicity?

I'm trying to learn how to use Audicity and the directions don't really work for me they need to be more specific. Well the effects tab doesn't turn the options black so you can change the tone of the thing you recorded. I'm trying to make the thing I recorded to do faster but it won't let me saying some reason you have to have the Audio and I did. Whats the promblem?

You have to click on the audio waves and then drag to where you want the effect to stop.Then you can click on 'Effects' and select 'Change Speed'.
