Depends on the type of bird you want to get into. The parakeet is a friendly smaller bird that will adapt very well to being handled when young. The next step up into the parrot family would be a qaucker parrot. I own one and she is my best friend. She talks very well and will even start a conversation with you. Either of these 2 birds mentioned are good beginner birds. But beware the parrot family has a very long life span and thus is a life long partner. My qaucker parrot is now 28 years old and is very healthy.

You can check into all different kinds of birds - but a parakeet is usually a good first choice. They are friendly - can learn to talk (right now a budgie has the highest vocabulary - about the Aferican Grey) and are a lot less expensive. Hope you have a great time!! CHeck out the different kinds of birds - www.goodsearch.com and you can donate while you search!

I guess it sort of depends on what you're looking for in a pet bird. If you're looking for birds for posterity, I'd say finches. If you want more of an interactive bird you can cuddle/play with..Cockatiels, Green Cheeks are fun, parrotlets are good too, but a tad on the spendy side, and parakeets, or lovebirds. They're all relatively easy to train, and make great little companions!

Parakeets!! I have two and they're sooo easy to feed and take care of. Just a bit of bird seed(and for little treats, some carrots, apples, and other small fruits), a little bit of water and a medium sized cage, and there ya go!!

My first bird was a male Pacific Parrotlet, it was nice because he was pretty small and very friendly and he did learn to talk. I also have had Green Cheek Conures and I would recommend them also because they are sweet and they don't make a lot of noise.

i have a little lovebird that behaves beutifully, they are small, and easily tamed, you have to get them young though, and only get one of them. No mirrors in the cage either, let them bond to you instead. my guy is so tame that he rides on my shoulder all day, in fact he is up there right now.

I vote for parakeet too. If you can get a young one, you can train it to be very friendly. They are inexpensive and hardy.
