How old is he? I mean, if he's not old enough to potty train, why would he freak? If he IS old enough, he may be embarassed and that's why he's freaking. If that's the case, I'd be very careful about saying it in front of people. Potty training can be hard enough, and you don't want him to apply anything negative to it...not to mention that;
Boys often learn to pee in the toilet, long before they do the other, and if you say that in front of people, and he's really trying to learn...it would be VERY embarassing if he really HADN'T done that in his diaper. It would be like telling everyone in the room that he really ISN'T a big boy.

Maybe if a child is old enough to be embarrassed about having a poop in his diaper its time to stop using diapers!

It is a common thing to ask, but you have to respect his feelings always. It is a good sign that he is aware that it is a private and personal matter. I would reinforce that gently as it may be a good step to begin potty training.
In the mean time you could develop a personal code between you two to indicate the need for a new diaper. Then it could become his code to you when he thinks he might need to visit the bathroom.

well if hes old enough to freak out over it then he shouldn't be in a diaper. take it away and ask him if he pooped his pants instead. maybe the embarrassment will help potty train him.

Depends on his age and cognitive developmental level. If he is old enough to be embarrassed when asked this question, then it is time to start asking in a whisper. Next time, bend down and quietly ask him in his ear. Really, if you suspect that he has pooped (either he's made a face or you can smell it), then just say, "Let's go change your pants." Don't ask if you know he's done it... it's redundant.

It does not matter. They are to poop in their diapers only, and most of the kids know this thing.

i dont think that its a big deal my sister ask her 1 years old boy what hes doing when hes doing a poop, do you know what he says....he just says poop. Of course we all laugh. No worst then a man farting and admitting it to the world, at least you asked politely.

If he is potty trained and an older child, then yes it is mean. But you say "pooped his diaper" so chances are he is not trained yet. I ask my son did he go potty.

it is probally embarrassing for the child maybe ask the question in a different way,like did you have an accident? or maybe take the child aside and ask him/her. you can damage a child's self esteem,by embarrassing him/her in front of others by making them feel less of a person.he/she could also have a bowel problem,or was scared or too shy to say they have to go to the bathroom.some kids are shy and timid around other adults.ask the child to whisper in your ear when they have to go potty so they don't get embarrassed.

It is mean if you do it on purpose and don't respect the child. What is also mean is all these people telling you he should be potty trained. Really, not ever child is trained at age 1. And you should never, never use embarasment as a tool to potty train!
