1 cup Crisco shortening
3/4 c. brown sugar
3/4 c. white sugar
2 eggs
1 tsp baking soda disolved into 1 Tblspoon boiling water
2 1/2 c flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla

I've been making this recipe since I was 10 years old (so 15 years) and it's the best. The cookies alway come out soft and chewy. Just bake them at 350 degrees until they turn slightly brown and let them cool a couple minutes on the pan (about 10-12 minutes).

I follow the recipe on the back of the bag, and I only use unsalted butter (no margarine), and I also add in about a half cup to a cup of ground-up old fashioned oats at the end before I add the chips; it seems to keep them softer and adds a nutty flavor. Also you could follow the recipe on the back of the bag, add a little cinnamon (1/2 tsp?), a bit of orange zest, semi-sweet chocolate chips, white chocolate chips, dried cranberries and oatmeal, and they are delicious. Search for a recipe on epicurious.com called Triple Chocolate Cranberry Oatmeal Cookies if you're interested.
