Some shots are "slammers", you tap the glass on the bar to turn the drink to fizz so it's easier to drink. Any hard liquor drink can be turned into a slammer by adding a little ginger ale. I'm in Canada, by the way.

Great question. I'm from PA and had never seen it until I joined the Army. Started doing it in NC, but my friends were from all over the states, so who knows. I always got the impression that it was in honor for those who weren't with us anymore, but I'm not completely sure.

I heard this from a Vet that was at my bar, it started in the military to honor those that lost their lives in combat. And i guess civilians do it either cause they think its cool (they dont know what it means) or they do it for respect for the dead or they have decided that it means something completely different to them.
ohh im from Minnesota

Never heard of it--I guess you'd have to ask someone who does it.
