or 40 miles. We only have Verizon Wireless where we live. and paying $70 a month just to talk to each other is stupid.

It's illegal. You have to have special license to own one. Only law enforcement and certain federal and government agencies, and legitmate corporations for legitimate authorized use are allowed to use such a wide range (Anything more than 5 miles I guess).

How about VOIP (Voice over IP). If you both have computers, you can attach mikes and speakers and talk directly to each other. Skipe, Yahoo Messenger, plus many others support this. Yes you can even do it from a dial-up.

Or, you can both get an Amateur radio (ham) license, and then use Amateur radios to comminicate. These could be walkie talkies, mobile radios, or base radios. It will depend on where you live, but there are repeaters that extend the range of walkie talkies to easily cover 40 miles. Even without a repeater 40 miles is quite possible, given the right antenna and radio, to talk reliably over 40 miles. The Technician license is an entry level license, and just requires that you pass a relatively simple test. This class of license allows you to use any amateur frequency above 50 MHz, and 2 Meters would probably be your best bet, unless you live in a big city. Check out arrl.org for more info. Realize that your communications are not private though, on any radio. Also, don't be tempted to just buy the equipment and not get licensed. Amateurs are very protective of their frequencies, and will find you VERY quickly.

GMRS is another option. This is a UHF radio service, similar to FRS (Family Radio Service), but also requires a license. There are repeaters that allow 40 mile conversations depending on where you live. I'm not into GMRS, but if you search the web you should be able to find more info on it.
