because religion is a great motivation for people. to get a 20 something person to vote is not easy, but to get a 20 something religious fundamentalist to vote is very easy, find out what his pet peeve issus is and make him believe that you agree with him. then he will vote for you in principal.
do this for 40-50 thousand people and you have something,
why do you think that Gay Marriage is such a big issue?
the average american really does not care about it. but it will get a Christian fundamentalist to the pools and voting for the person that is against it. and with the homosexual population at an average of 10 percent of the whole it is a safe bet. that there will be more Christian Fundamentalist's at teh pools than the peple that believe in freedom for all.
if you want to see this trend stop, get everyone that is over 18 to go and vote.

The separation of church and state only exists in the first ammendment, and then it restricts the congress from affecting the free worship of religion.
These words separation of church and state come from Thomas Jefferson's letter to the Danbury Baptists.
In it he refers to a wall of separation of church and state. But what he was really saying is our government is a secular government and not a theocracy.
We are governed by the laws of men, and not the laws of God.
Nothing wrong with that, the founders came from countries that had state supported religion. There was no freedom of choice when it came to religion.
In England people were hanged for printing the Bible, or trying to distribute it. That is the kind of things that happen when you have a state supported religion.

We make a big deal of them because they are important to us. The words separation of church and state do not appear in the constitution. It is only an atheistic doctrine that has spread spawned from a letter Thomas Jefferson write once.
The 1st amendment clearly states that the govt must not establish a state religion as has been done in many cultures before its time. It just leads to tyranny. It however states in the same amendment not to prohibit the free exercise of religion!!! (the part most atheists miss)

The separation of church and state is not a law and there is no provision for it in the Constitution or any document. It is merely suggested as an idea, just as the Pursuit of Happiness is something all men should have.
There is no law that says you can or can't show religious themes in public buildings. The reason there is an uproar about it is it is considered to be in bad taste. Politicians and the government are supposed to represent all peoples and showing your religious ideals is showing your bias towards one group over another.
Unfortunately most politicians these days are chosen for just that reason- their favoritism of one group over another, though people like to believe we are a UNITED country, we are slowly moving in the other direction.

Read the Constitution & Amendments. No where in there does it say a separation of church and state. What it does say is that the Govt. cannot tell you how you can worship the Lord. They didn't want to have it like it was in England. They wanted freedom to come and worship without being told who, or what they had to serve. Too many people don't know their History. They just listen to what others say, and believe that. America needs to wake up, and start reading the Truth for themselves.

I never understood how there could be seperation between church and state when most of the founding fathers were christains and based the constitution on biblical teachings.

Because since there has never been a non-Christian President they figure the way to go is to be super Christian. They don't honor the seperation.

It wins votes.
I live in Texas, the bible belt. I see who is at the polls. Older conservatives are there voting every time. So they win.
You want to protect this country from religion. Than you must vote.

Good question. I'm less likely to vote for someone if they talk about their beliefs.
