i believed they existed. but why did they die out?

Frank, they didn't die out - only became more obscure. In this society as it is today wizards would be condemned from the first incantation! Wizards are still here but are VERY discreet and secretive. If you take the time to REALLY look around you, you will see the results of their magic everywhere - you just have to know what to look for.

As I recall, Merlin was an actual person, but merely a court magician, and guidance person. He wasn't the version you find in the myths.
However, Wizards still exist. Just not openly in positions of power. Some are called Magus, and what not.

Same reason that the Miracles, Plagues, Burning Bushes, Angels of death in the Bible died out. Because modern science proved their non-existence. If you had a Bic lighter in the 1200's you would be considered a wizard who could conjur flames. But these days people would just think you have a lighter.

When people stop believing in magic, magic moves underground and does not exist for the society that does not believe, that mocks them or burns them at the stake. Finally it has been hidden for so long that it basically ceases to exist. Belief is the power of magic.

we did not die out. we simply were forced into hiding for the last 1500 years, and now know the better art of discretion.
we are all around and living with you in your communities, and you will find our help when you need it. but other than thet we will usually remain obscure and secret.
the days of burning witches are not forgotten to us, and the mentality that allowed thoes times to happen is still strong. there are tenative laws tha tprotect us, but we cannot rely on the laws of freedom, when they change to meet the demands of the newest political pressure group.

Hi Frank, I believe they were real to. But all things must die. WE have to keep the balance of life,and death. They are in Heaven now,and have their own magic school. Magic will never die.

We still have them but in different forms.
Present day computer gurus are wizards, but we simply call them geeks, until we need their help.
To your dog, you are a wizard.
Proof: You can open a can of dog food, he can't.
