An inside cat usually won't do anything on it's own. They need stimulation from you. A toy that it can chase while you move it around I always thought was a good one, like the one with the feather on the end. A ball of foil, just something that catches the eye and the kitty is most interrested in.

Go to a pet store. They have a cat toy which is a plastic fishing rod with a string attached. On the end of the string is a feather or a small stuffed toy filled with catnip. Dangle it in front of the cat while you watch TV. The cats really enjoy it and jump around alot. Be sure and get a fishing rod with a comfortable handle, the thin handles are uncomfortable to hold after awhile.

Unfortunately some cats are just less active. Put the cat on a diet. You can't make a cat stop being a cat and they naturally sleep somewhere around 22+ hours a day.

First off, take her to a vet and make sure there are no medical problems. Cat can have tyroid problems that can cause them to gain alot of weight. There are other health issues that can cause weight gain too.
To get her more active, you need to be more active with her. Pick up some toys where you can interact with her. Ideas are, laser pointers, toys on strings, balls, etc.
Also try some cat-nip. Now only do this if your kitty is over a year old. Cat-nip is not good for kittens.

get her toys at the pet store, and introduce them to her, you will probably have a good time yourself, cats love to play, and when they play they are also exercising. cats also love to play with yarn, I have two cats and they play most of their waking hours.
If the toys don't work, then maybe she needs a playmate, such as another cat. I have found if you have two cats in your home they are much happier because they keep each other company.
I hope this helps.

to get my fat cat going, I stand him on his hind legs, holding him with my hands underneath his shoulders. Then I "walk" him this way with just his hind legs walking. I do it fast saying, "run, run, run..." Then I let go. This always starts him in a playful mood. We play mock chase and hide and seek. He loves the game.
It could take your cat a few "go's" before he gets the idea.

Try playing with her yourself. We have a couple of little fuzzy things and balls that we throw for our cats. And they will also chase paper wads as long as you'll throw them!
Good luck!
