Refrigeration, process of lowering the temperature and maintaining it in a given space for the purpose of chilling foods, preserving certain substances, or providing an atmosphere conducive to bodily comfort. Storing perishable foods, furs, pharmaceuticals, or other items under refrigeration is commonly known as cold storage. Such refrigeration checks both bacterial growth and adverse chemical reactions that occur in the normal atmosphere.

A application of the physics formula that runs our world, mostly.
PV=nrT where P is pressure, V is volume. n in the number of moles (not the small underground mammal, chemical term for amount of molecules), . r is a rate constant. and T is temperature.
so to get refrigeration we isolate T like so -- T =nr/PV and we change P and V so that T goes down.
change it a bit so P+nrT/V and we have a internal combustion engine. and we drive to the store to get a refrigerator.

Why you want to know? I would define it as any mechanical apparatus that can change some energy source to cooling for the purpose of cooling things other than living things, specially being more complex than just ice and/or water in a container. That would just be cooling.

refrigeration is the science of producing and maintaining temperatures below that of the surrounding atmosphere. ie., removing heat from a substance to be cooled.

It is the moving of heat from one space to another, so that the first space becomes colder. Invariably, the result is that the second space gets hotter.

By setting it up in reverse, it can be used to move heat inside in the winter to heat the indoors space.
