How much time do you give tylenol to bring down a fever before you know it is not going to work?

It should start to work immediately. However, the fever may not come down sufficiently or may recur depending on whats causing the fever. Does you child have an ear infection maybe? A fever is your body's response to infection or illness. The body is trying to use the fever to "kill" the virus or germ. If the fever gets above 101 degrees or last longer than 24 hours, go to the doctor for a checkup. There may be an underlying problem. You may also try alternating tylenol (acetamenophen), and motrin (ibuprofen), sometimes that works.

If you have given full doses of tylenol and motrin (you can give both at the same time) over a half hour ago (it takes a while to kick in) and your child's fever isn't coming down, then it is time to go to the ER, especially if your child isn't making a lot of sense or seems unusually lethargic/is hard to wake. If the tylenol and motrin are working and the fever just returns when they wear off, that's normal (since tylenol is given every 4 hours and motrin every 6, staggering them means that your child's temperature stays down). My son runs extremely hot - he has hit 106 and the doctor still said he didn't need to come in because he does respond to the tylenol/motrin and his temperature could be managed at home - so part of it is knowing what's normal for your child. For him, we don't even consider it a fever unless it hits 101, because his normal temp is 99.1-99.7. My daughter is the opposite and even 100 warrants an immediate trip to the doctor. Because I spent so much time on the phone with advice nurses/pediatricians with my son's fevers, I can tell you that they no longer recommend lukewarm baths/fans on a feverish child, because cooling the skin actually makes the child's body work harder to heat itself. They do recommend light loose clothing (change when they get sweated through) and lots of fluids.

Well tylenol is not well known for seriously reducing a fever.

First, I hope you gave them the right dosage, and at least the children's strength.

Secondly, make sure you give the child LOTS AND LOTS of water. It usually helps out more than tylenol. Make sure they go to the bathroom as much as possible. And tylenol actualy dehydrates you...so you will want to make sure they take 2 cups of water with each dosage (something nto everyone knows)

So just force lots of water to the child, and if tylenol doesnt work...move onto Motrin. The Acetomethaphine (AKA Tylenol) is the main fever reducer in medicines, but its best to take it in conjuction with other meds.

About an hour, but if it has not worked by 90 minutes then it probably won't work. Don't fret, just giver some Motrin also, you can alternate the two. Take motrin every 6-8 hours and tyllenol every 3-4 hours. If this does not work, then call the doctor. You can also give a warm bath, normal temperature.

Oral Tylenol takes an average of half hour to take effect. If the fever does not go down 1hr after taking it...its time to try alternative medication like Ibuprofen (check for drug allergies first!) Sponging usually helps too.

It could take up to one hour if it still doesn;t work give him or her a cool bath to bring it down Luke warm bath in temperature. He or she will not like this but it is better than over dosing your child;Cause i think Tylenol for a child is really bad.If you are giving it to much the doctors do not tell you that in later years they can become a drug addict. It is true it happen to my son.You no that when they get a fever that is part of the healing the infection so when it comes down they are fine and usually you can just wait and let it run it coarse. But if you give them a warm bath it goes down naturaly.I was a mother that didn;t want to give my kids any thing until they needed it.So just think of all these moms that just give there kids tylenol for every little thing.
