The brightest star in the sky that is not the sun is Sirius, the Dog star. The Dogon people of Africa say that their gods came from that star. Their gods, they say, had tails like fish and some of their gods died on the way here in large ships. Curiously, the picture of their gods corresponds somewhat to Dagon, the fishtailed God of the Babylonians.
Likewise in Africa, Egypt timed the flooding of the sacred Nile river with the rising of Sirius which they called Osiris (the dying and reborn God). When Sirius rose just a little before sunrise, the Nile was due to flood, bringing its life-giving waters and silt to the land. Strangely, too, this was in August, the so-called "Dog Days" of summer.
The Moslems have an aversion to dogs. This stems probably from the Prophet having a personal dislike for them. Dogs were some of the first animals domesticated. Dogs are wolves that never grow up. Sort of like the men we now have who still remain boys, playing with X-boxes, going from affair to affair, "lost boys".
The bounty hunter Dog certainly is a curious adjunct to all of this. A recovering druggy, now Christian, and family man, wearing his hair in a long feminine fashion, he presents a soft and tough image. Dog or God? The reversible nature has not hurt him.
Now we will not get into Cats. For in ancient Egypt cats were worshipped as gods and no cat has ever forgotten that.
