For some reason I am unable to sleep facing up, I've only ever been able to sleep on my front, with my head turned to the side. When I try sleeping on my back, I can't seem to drop off no matter how much I relax. The only time I can sleep face up, is when I fall asleep without wanting to, when watching a film, revising from a book etc.

I've tried placing a pillow underneath by knees and trying not to focus, just picturing blackness ... but then I don't need to do anything special to fall asleep when I turn over.

Any ideas on how I can get into bed face up and drop off to sleep without needing to turn over after an hour because I can't get to sleep?

Would appreciate the help =)

I actually have this problem too. I've had some major back problems this past summer and was told to sleep on my back with pillows under my knees. The only problem is I can not sleep on my back at all. The only exception is when I fall asleep on my sofa. I don't know if your problem is the same as mine, I think mine is because of trauma that I experienced earlier in my life. If you do find some way to over come this problem could you please let me know as well.

If you're comfortable sleeping on your stomach, why worry about whether or not you can sleep on your back? As far as I know there's absolutely nothing wrong or dangerous about sleeping on your stomach.

Personally, I can't fall asleep laying in my back either, I have to lay on my side. Nothing wrong with that, either.

If someone's giving you grief about your sleeping on your stomach, tell them to call a doctor and find out whether or not it's normal to sleep on your stomach. My guess is the answer would be that it's perfectly fine.

why does it really matter if you don't have any problems falling asleep in another position?
you have focused on this issue sooo long now that it is probably in your head now. so no matter what you will have problems. try not to think about it and let your body sleep the way it is comfortable.

You are just like me. We try to sleep on our backs because it is such a comfortable position, but just can't seem to do it. I would suggest sleeping any way you can. It's the sleep that is so important, not the position.

I still don't get why you want or need to sleep face up anyways, ask your doctor, it could be muscles in your neck that don't want to relax or something.
