I've got a question here. Why do people consciously choose a religion or set of values that imposes even more rules and regulations on an already overloaded populous??? What do you "get" from religion??? Maybe the fact that with religion you don't have to think about eventual non-existence????

I don't understand you at all. Why not choose religion when it limits the rest of eternity for you. Do you deny that you have a spirit within you? What do you think makes you think about something you know you were wrong in doing and what makes you feel so bad when you do something that your conscience tells you it is very bad for you to do? You do have a spirit in you that you were born with. It's your soul. If you choose not to believe in a deity and think you were evolved from some slime floating in the primeval ocean, I feel sorry for you. Even the scientist now are thinking there is a God, a Creator. For life to happen accidentally is beyond calculation. As smart as we think we are, we are not able to create life from nothing. We cannot even create life from something. God is real and Jesus is real. You only have this opportunity to do it right. Once you die, there are no second chances. You have a lifetime to choose the right path or choose to ignore the obvious. Once you have chosen Jesus, you'll have no desire to do the things you say you will be limited in doing if you choose religion. God loves you so very much and He wants you with Him for eternity. The choice is yours. If you think you'll wait and make the choice later, when is that? Later could be in the next few minutes. No one is infallible and no one can depict when they will leave this life. God Bless.

I think some people choose religion because it DOES set limits. The Golden Rule applies to so many situations. I think the rules in religion are more like guidelines for what is acceptable behaviour, and what isn't.

Some of the rules are senseless, but some really do count. Maybe you could compare it to contracts signed by famous people, that require that a bowl of EXCLUSIVELY green M&M's be left on the dressing room table at all of their appearances. Do they really care if there are mixed colors of M&M's? Of course not...but the oddball demands ensure that even the minor details of their contract are adhered to.

Actually, I think most religious people would say their religion *frees* them.

I can only speak for my own religion, but it gives me a complete guide for improving my mind. I've read hundreds of books on all different subjects and nothing lays out a cohesive explanation of the world, the human mind, and how the two relate.

For me, nothing is even close.

I do not think in terms of my religion limiting me. When I actually study my faith, it opens doors to me by teaching me values and why they are important. It teaches me to order my priorities. It teaches how God can touch lives if one allows him and also how to face the ups and downs in life. It explains man's character the results of choices that he makes. To find these things, one must put all the "white noise" of rules and limitations and other negatives aside and really study for oneself and think. There is much to be known and uncovered. I love the story of Ruth, who was faithful to her family in a strange land until she had to leave with all her family killed about her except her mother-in-law. Then she goes to a new land and works hard to provide for them. She is exalted for her behavior and I admire her. It causes me to want to have qualities like that which matter in live rather than the commercials on TV. You ask a tough question which we all encounter and even now I wonder sometimes about your concerns. Good luck and remember there is much to value and learn there.

Religion has long been considered the primary source for moral guidelines.

If it could be a force for good in the world, that would be great.

Unfortunately, it has historically had the effect of dividing people and has been the root of much violence and suffering.

Well I get alot from my faith. I get eternal security. I store up my treasures in heaven. That is what I'm here for. If you are here for this world and it's worldly things etc... than that's your thing. But to follow the word of God is not easy, you are right. Lots of temptations to give up and sacrifices to make, but ultimately each time you chose Gods way over Satans way you have stored treasure. Which is not to be confused with salvation. It is after salvation that one chooses to follow Gods word or not.

Because God set limits for a reason.

You limit your children from running in the street because you know they could get hit by a car. They have no idea why you wont let them run in the street, and they probably get really mad when you go and grab them and yell at them and tell them dont run in the street. But YOU know that its for their own good.

Just as the children will grow up and realise you were right, I believe when we get to Heaven all these limitations will make perfect sense.

Religion teaches people values about how to treat others and not just be barbaric running around killing, raping and looting which would probably be acceptable without religion.
