Great question!
Actually, having a chile out of wedlock generally meant that pre-marital sex had taken place. This is considered a sin by God, as attested to in scripture. This is not man's opinion, but that of God Himself. The Bible wasn't written BY men, but THROUGH them. I liken this to a medical transcriptionist typing out what the doctor dictates. The transcriptionist isn't reporting on the patient's condition, though he/she may tweak the vocabulary here and there, the doctor is. The transcriptionist just put down for viewing what the doctor conveyed. The Greek words used to describe the scriptures being "spoken" by God is actually more like "God breathed".
Betrothal, at the time, was almost like being married. However, the young woman remained in the parent's home under their custody until the actual marriage would take place. It was a total commitment.
As Jesus was born in Bethlehem, the place to which Joseph and Mary travelled, this would show that they were, in fact, married. The bible even says that Joseph took Mary to be his wife, but did not "know" her (physical relations) until after Jesus was born.
Jospeh, however, was NOT the father of Jesus. He was his "step" father. This is because Jesus was not the product of Mary and Joseph's physical union. Jesus's "father" was God.
No, this does not mean that Mary had "sex" with God, as some would try to attest. Jesus is both God and man. Incarnate, which means He is God, or at least a part of the Godhead in human form. Just as we are part of our mother and part of our father, Jesus is, human and God at the same time. This is what makes him different than any of us, yet at the same time, in many ways the same. He was built fully human just like we are. This is why he can fully understand how we feel...he felt everything we feel.
I hope I haven't made this too complicated.

Well not exactly. Joseph and Mary were pledged to be married (engaged) when Mary became pregnant. However, by the time Jesus was born, Joseph had married Mary.
So Jesus was not born out of wedlock.
However, you can bet nobody believed that Mary became pregnant by God! (Who would?) They believed Mary was a slut who slept around and got knocked up cheating on her future husband. Joseph didn't believe her either... he was going to break the engagement but God spoke to him in a dream and told him that Mary was telling the truth about being visited by an angel.
Jesus grew up with this stigma and scorn attached to him all his life (At some points in the bible people mock Jesus by asking him repeatedly who his father is... they are trying to bring up the well-known fact that Mary got pregnant while she was engaged... and not by Joseph!)
To address the second part of your question - being born out of wedlock is not a sin... a baby has no choice on how it is born or to whom! The sin belongs to the parents, but the baby is innocent.

Jesus is not born out of wedlock. Marriage is represented by only three important parties. The minister (representing God), the groom, and the bride. Back when Jesus is conceived, God Blessed the union of Joseph and Mary. In short He, God, married them Himself.
If you're born out of wedlock don't worry you have nothing to do with the preceding event. Commit your life to God and you'll be fine.

They were married when he was born - however Joseph was not his biological father.
How can the Son of God be born out of wedlock? This is not a situation like any other. Not an issue.

By the time he was born, they were a married couple.
Christians believe that God the Father is all powerful. That he has the power to transfer the life force of his son, from the heavens, to the young, poor Jewish virgin girl at the time, Mary. Thus, he remained, the Son of God.
When he was born, his human step-father, and mother, Mary, were a married couple.
Why ask questions to which you already know the answer?

That just reminded me.
Mary and God were not married. Remember, all bastard sons go to Hell, by sins of the father [I forget where the passage is, but it was very instrumental to my leaving Christianity.].
But yes, Jesus was born out of wedlock.

Technically, yes, according to Christian belief, but being born out of wedlock isn't a sin, fornication is.
